Java Cafe began in Idaho in 1991 and built its early following on the West Coast, shaped by a distinctly independent spirit. Its arrival in South Bend called for more than a new location. Harken reimagined the brand and interior together, creating a fresh expression of Java’s history that feels sunny, spirited, and entirely its own.

Inspired by the founder’s irreverent rock-and-roll personality, the design finds energy in unexpected combinations. Playful geometry meets warm wood, soft pastels meet graphic pattern, and expressive lighting floats above an eclectic mix of café tables, curved banquettes, and lounge seating. Abundant greenery and collected details temper the energy with warmth, creating a space that feels considered without taking itself too seriously.

The café shifts easily through the rhythms of the day, welcoming morning regulars, college students, professionals, and neighbors alike. Its identity extends beyond the counter through custom merchandise, integrated graphics, tailored millwork, and a visible presence within the office lobby and outdoor patio. The result is both a new model for the brand and a lively expression of its invitation to South Bend: Wake Up & Live.
